Arts in Schools Report
A report issued each year by NYC Department of Education’s Office of Arts and Special Projects, OASP. It provides information about art education and instruction at the school level. The report is based on data sources including the Annual Arts Education Survey, New York City Department of Education databases and the Principal Satisfaction Survey. Some of the information is self-reported by school staff. The report for each school is on the "Statistics" page of the school's website and the report issued for the entire NYC district is on the OASP web site (see Resources for a link to the web site).
Art Education Liaison
A school staff person who provides information to teachers, staff and the school community about arts education opportunities. Schools are not required to have an art education liaison.
Attendance Rate
The percentage of enrolled students who attend a school each day.
Borough
NYC is geographically divided into five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.
Career Technical High School
Also called CTE schools, these are high schools and educational programs focused on teaching skilled and in-demand occupational trades like applied sciences, modern technologies, and career preparation.
Certified Art Teacher
A person who holds a certificate issued by New York State to allow employment in a public school district as a teacher of dance, music, theater, or visual/media arts.
City Council
51 elected officials (City Council Members) who are elected to 4 year terms to represent 51 geographic areas of NYC (City Council Districts). The City Council is responsible for local law making for NYC and develops the annual budget in partnership with the Mayor. (see Resources for more information)
Classroom Teacher
A person who holds a certificate issued by New York State that allows employment as a teacher for a whole classroom, a small group or one student.
Cultural Partnerships
Schools may have cultural partnerships with arts and cultural non-profit organizations that have been approved by the Department of Education, to work with schools. Many types of arts education programs can be offered such as field trips, in-school performances, artist residencies, school community engagement and professional development for educators and school leaders.
Dedicated Art Spaces
Rooms designed and used solely for dance music, theater, visual & media arts instruction and activities. These spaces might include: Dance: dance floor, mirrors, barres, etc.; Music: audio equipment, storage for instruments or equipment, etc.; Theater: flexible seating, performance area, costume and prop storage, etc.; Visual & Media Arts: studio tables/desks, art supply storage, computers, editing software and cameras, etc.
Demographics
Statistical characteristics of human populations (such as age or ethnicity/race).
Department of Education
Also referred to as “DOE”. The NYC department of government that manages its public school system. NYC is the largest school district in America, educating 1.1 million students in more than 1,800 schools.
District 75 Special Education
District 75 provides support programs for students who are on the autism spectrum, are severely emotionally challenged, are sensory impaired, and/or are multiply disabled. They provide Inclusive Programs in school district buildings. In these programs, students with learning disabilities are provided with special education supports within their school.
Elementary School
Grades Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
English Language Learner
Also referred to as ELLS. A student whose native language is not English and who needs support learning English. Schools use surveys and tests to measure a student’s English skills; schools review those results and decide if the student needs support.
General Academic School
A school that operates according to the regulations and policies required by the Department of Education.
Graduation Rate
The percentage of students that graduate from high school in four years with a local diploma, a Regents diploma, or an Advanced Regent diploma.
High School
Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Inside Schools Profile
Inside Schools is a website, www.insideschools.org , that provides contact information, reviews, school statistics and public comments about NYC’s individual public schools. The school profiles are based on quantitative data and qualitative reviews. It is a program of The New School's Center for New York City Affairs.
Middle School
Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Neighborhood School District
The school district that serves a student’s residential address. There are 32 school districts in NYC.
Pre-kindergarten (Pre-k)
One year of school for students, aged 4 and 5, which takes place before kindergarten.
Principal
The educator who is the highest ranking administrator in a school and is responsible for the overall operation of the school.
Student with Disabilities
Students with special education needs, Individualized Education Programs (IEP), mobility impairments, accessibility needs, or require special classes in an integrated setting.
Transfer School High Schools
Academically rigorous, often small, high schools designed to re-engage students who have dropped out or who have fallen behind in credits.
